Obituary

Born in the commune of Limbé, Haiti, Pastor Charles Michel Timus Constant was the legitimate son of the late Timus and Hermance Constant. He was the first son of seven children. Pastor Michel accepted Jesus as his personal Savior at the age of 11.   Passionate about his new relationship with God, he immersed himself in the waters of Baptism at a very young age and became increasingly fond of Christian affairs. As a result, he would be found in Sunday school, youth activities, choir and Christian education, retreats, evangelization, meetings at home or in the streets etc... It was therefore not surprising to see him take the clergy path in his early twenties.

Indeed, right after completing his academic curriculum, he enrolled at the Evangelical Theological Seminary of Port-au-Prince, formerly L' Ecole Biblique De Bolosse where he completed his studies and was ordained Pastor in the first quarter of the 1960s. Pastor Michel worked especially in rural areas to bring the Gospel to souls who literally had no access to it. Thus, he traveled on horseback or on the back of a donkey, to Soufrière, bas-Limbé, to Caracol and other remote places of Northern Haiti, often times in precarious conditions to preach the Word. He suffered some serious injuries to the point that a renowned American doctor gave him a poor prognosis in his youth.  But as we learned from the Holy Scriptures, our days are appointed by God, He marks the term Job 14:5. Who would have thought that he would reach fourscore years? Yes, he did by God's grace. While he resided in Port-Margot and pastored the local Baptist church, he "discovered a pretty hidden flower in the valley" named Marie Madeleine and married her on January 2, 1964. As she worked at the Good Samaritan hospital of Limbé, he eventually joined her and worked as an X-ray technician and chaplain while serving the churches of Soufriere and Bas-Limbé until his emigration to the United States on October 17, 1980.

To us his children, he explained that his stay in the United States would last around 5 years. He wanted to work to accumulate enough savings in order to provide a better future for the family. But shortly after arriving in South Florida, the Lord had a different plan for his life. In circumstances beyond his control, in June 1982 he founded the first Haitian Methodist Church of Pompano Beach, now Bethesda House of Blessings in Tamarac, Florida. For 42 years, he impacted so many lives with his service, his humility, his wisdom, his preaching, his passion for the Gospel of Christ. My father was a good man, with a heart of gold, who exemplified what it means to be "slow to anger and abounding in kindness."  He was an inspiration and a blessing to everyone God placed on his path.

Pastor Michel expressed his encounter with stomach aches and lack of appetite at the end of June. He was immediately examined by his primary care physician and referred to a gastroenterologist who saw him immediately and ordered some exams. We have to tell you that this man took his health very seriously. He exercised meticulous attention to his diet and professed resolute discipline regarding his doctors' prescriptions. Following his visit with the gastroenterologist, he completed the tests and treatments but showed no respite. The family and the Church began to worry when he was no longer present at our worship services. Pastor Michel was one of the first to arrive at all church services. It was a source of pride for this octogenarian to sit behind the wheel of his car and drive himself to church. After his participation in the Women's Cruise Retreat from July 18 to 22, 2024, his health continued to fail. He was hospitalized on July 23 and diagnosed with a malignant, painful cancer which he endured courageously. The Church and the family interceded before the Throne for his recovery, but the Bridegroom came and clothed him with immortality on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 9:50 am. Pastor Michel, come good and faithful servant, enter the joy of your master.

We thank God for allowing us to enjoy the presence of this exceptional father, grand-father, shepherd, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, colleague, relative, this public servant, this example of endurance, wisdom and humility for 88 years, 4 month and 24 days 9 hours and 50 minutes. Blessed be the Lord! Alleluia! Glory to God!
