Chester John
Szachor
Mar 7, 1932 — Sep 9, 2024
Chester John Szachor, 92, of Coconut Creek, Florida, passed away on September 9, 2024. He was the youngest born of four children on March 7, 1932, to Polish immigrants Rose and John Szczachor, of Wallington, New Jersey.
Chet enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951, engaging in four years of continued service. He was listed as a ship's electrician, serving on the destroyer, USS DeLong. One of his fondest memories was having been stationed at the U.S. base in our beloved Key West, Florida. Prior to his naval career, he remained a steadfast proud supporter of the VFW with an unwavering love for his country.
Lenora and Chet first met at a local dance hall near Belmont Park in Garfield, New Jersey. Their worlds collided a second time when they met again and he asked her to dance. The rest was history.
As their relationship blossomed and long into their marriage, they continued their mutual love of dance and were often seen whirling around the dance floor to the tunes of polka musician Jimmy Sturr & His Orchestra. Catching them in a dance was always a joy to watch. Big band music, especially Glenn Miller, were also some of his favorite sounds.
Chet's other passions included league bowling and deep sea fishing, as well as having a keen interest in American history. He also enjoyed the thrill of the casino and trying his hand with Lady Luck at his favorite game, Texas Hold 'em.
He loved his wife and children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with all his heart.
Chet is survived by his wife, Lenora; children, Sharon (Fred) Reineke, Darlene (Ed) DeVault, Jodi (Paul) Monte, and Joe Szachor; grandchildren, Vincent, Anthony, Erika, Joe, Sophia, Jake and Riley; and great grandchildren, Paul and Luca.
Please share your memories of Chet or express condolences to his family through our online guestbook.
