Devon Bryan Hughes was born on December 18th, 1965, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to Ron Hughes and Glenda Smith. His father introduced him to music from at an early age and when he was 7, Devon started pretending to be a DJ on Y-100. After his father's passing in 1977, Glenda would raise Devon alone; something he always expressed respect and praise for.

In high school, Devon took up surfing and boxing and won three championships in the Junior Boxing League. In 1980, Devon would find his true calling, founding the FLDJs (Fort Lauderdale Disc Jockeys), under the stage name "Captain D." At 17, he started promoting concerts at Florida Skateway North and started working with local radio stations to promote up and coming artists and groups. He became a well-known DJ and MC in Florida, with many still listening to his music to this day. Throughout the history of FLDJs, Devon performed at over 2000 parties and events. His legacy lives on through his peers/fellow musicians, and the music that was inspired by the Ft. Lauderdale and Miami Bass sound.

Devon was a father to three children: Keegan, Jimmy, and Ava. In his later years, he worked at Uhaul in Margate as a Customer Service Representative. He was well-known and respected as an upstanding citizen of the community, and always took the opportunities he could to get behind a DJ deck.

He passed away on September 17th, 1965, at the age of 59 in Margate, Florida.
