Garrison Grant
Westbrook
Jan 29, 1955 — Jun 18, 2021
Garrison Grant Westbrook passed away on June 18, 2021, at 8:47 pm after an over two-month-long battle against COVID-19. Garry was born in Binghamton, NY, on January 29, 1955, to parents Robert and Mary Westbrook. When Garry was very young, Robert was transferred by IBM, and the family moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where Garry spent most of his childhood. It was here that he learned to love all things related to snow, winter, and the Minnesota Vikings. He always held out hope that he would see them win a Super Bowl.
In the summer of 1968, IBM once again transferred the family, but this time it was to South Florida, where they became some of the first residents of the City of Coral Springs. They moved into one of four model homes built on Woodside Drive, and Garry first attended Deerfield Beach High School and then later Coconut Creek High School, where he was part of the first graduating class of 1973.
During his senior year of high school, Garry volunteered with the Coral Springs Fire Department, often requiring him to be late to school or miss it altogether, though no one seemed to mind that once he gave them his winky smile, shrugged his shoulders, and said: "there was a fire." After graduation, he joined the Delray Beach Fire Department for his rookie year before moving to Margate Fire Department in 1974. There he was one of the first firefighters for the city, as reflected in his badge number, 12.
Garry served in many roles at Margate Fire Department, culminating as Chief of Department before retiring in 2011. During his time with the department, it continued to grow and earn many distinctions, including an ISO class rating of 1 and the building of the Firefighters Memorial Park; he was incredibly proud of these accomplishments and of all the firefighters he worked with.
Never one to rest on his laurels, Garry continued his education throughout his career, earning an Associate's Degree in Fire Science from Broward Community College in 1984, a Bachelor's Degree in Professional Studies from Barry University in 1995, and Executive Fire Officer designation from the National Fire Academy in 2000.
Other accomplishments include serving as the President of the Broward County Chiefs Association for a term, membership in the Florida, National, and International Chiefs Associations, and becoming a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus.
While the fire department was a significant part of his life, he also had another passion, his Corvette. He entered and won many awards at car shows, usually for the cleanest car. He always had a car detailing kit in his glovebox, always parked far away from everyone else, and always had a big smile on his face while driving that car.
Garry is survived by his wife Vicky Westbrook; his daughter Jennifer (Westbrook) Gilreath (Barry); his son Garrison Grant Westbrook, Jr. (Jodi Elia); the mother of his children Sharon Westbrook; his grandchildren Reid Smith, Stephen Gilreath, Lauren Gilreath, Jackson Gilreath, Georgia Brooke Gilreath, and Jameson Grant Gilreath; his brothers Robert D. Westbrook (Diana) and Thomas Westbrook; his nieces Shannon (Westbrook) Corso (Scott) and Kimberly (Westbrook) Farmer (Scott); his brother-in-law David Griffin; and his sisters-in-law Diana Cortright and Janice Griffin.
