Obituary

Powell, George T., of Margate, Florida, passed away September 23, 2023 at the age of 87. He was born November 7, 1935 in the Bronx to George and Anna Powell and attended Fordham Prep and Cardinal Hayes high schools.

After his marriage to Josephine Grasso in 1954 and the birth of his two oldest children, he joined the NYPD in 1957, advancing to the rank of detective in 1963. He was elected Detectives Endowment Association Financial Secretary for Manhattan and the Bronx in 1980 and also served as Chairman of the DEA Political Action Committee. He took his lobbying responsibilities seriously, obtaining a degree from the Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations at night, and was instrumental in obtaining improved working conditions and legislation benefiting his fellow detectives.

Throughout his career he was active in several organizations including the St. George Association, Holy Name Society, Emerald Society, and the NY-NJ Detectives Crime Clinic and received many awards including the Elks "Cop of the Year."

After 33 years of service, he retired in 1990, dividing his time between the Bronx and Margate while continuing to be active in many police and fraternal organizations including the Retired Detectives RDNY, NYCPD 10-13 Assoc Trustee of Broward County, Moose Club, Elks Club, American Legion, and AmVets. When he was not enjoying a martini or attending an event at one of his several clubs, he would relax with a crossword puzzle, solitaire, or an old movie on TCM.

Although he moved to Florida permanently in 2021, he remained a Bronxite and New Yorker at heart.

He is survived by his children Maureen, Mary, Margaret, Jeanne, and George, his stepchildren Ronald, Joseph, Emily, and Patricia. Grandfather to Christopher, Denise, and Catherine. Poppa George to Nicholas, Gregory, Joseph, Vincent, Dina, Danielle, and Lori.  He was predeceased by his wife Nancy Milazzo, son Timothy Powell, and siblings Helen, John, and Jane.
