Irvin Maurice
Minney
Aug 31, 1951 — Jun 24, 2022
Irvin Maurice Minney, 70 years old, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2022.
He was born August 31, 1951 to Elizabeth and Charles Minney in Mt. Holly, New Jersey. Irv began his early education in Mt. Holly and later moved to Camden, New Jersey where he lived his teenage years and completed his education, graduating from Camden High School. Upon his graduation he was accepted to Morgan State but instead decided to attend Glassboro State College, where he pursued his degree in Sociology. It was at Glassboro where his legacy of service was born. He joined VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America). While in VISTA, he worked with senior citizens helping them secure services for food, medicine, and housing. He also got involved with the BPUM (Black Peoples Unity Movement). BPUM, an enterprise in Camden county, was dedicated to the social, economic, educational, and political development of the underserved. Irv's involvement included everything from running local bingo games for the seniors, to helping children in the classroom at the daycare center, and canvasing neighborhoods to raise the community's political awareness during local, state and federal elections.
In 1974, Irvin married and soon after moved to Tallahassee, Florida where he worked in insurance for three years. He eventually made his way to Ft. Lauderdale and found employment working for the Commissioner of Insurance. He rose to the position of Deputy Commissioner of Insurance in Broward County before leaving the position. Irv was next called to serve as Administrative Assistant to Florida's Speaker of the House his "dream" job. He believed wholeheartedly in his ability to make a difference and he was humbled by the opportunity to address the needs and concerns of the community on behalf of the Speaker when he was away at the state capitol.
Ever a proponent for education, while working at the Museum of Discovery and Science, Irv hosted the annual city wide science fair, where he strongly advocated for minority student participation. In addition to the science fair, Irv sought to heighten the community's cultural awareness by bringing exhibits and lectures to the museum the included speakers such as Mae Jemison and the African scholar Asa Hilliard.
Irvin spent the last 17 years of his professional career serving as a Contract Administrator for the Community Bus program for Broward County Transit.
Irv was known for giving his time and energy for all type of endeavors within the community; voter registration, cultural awareness programs though the Old Dillard Museum, community activities at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center and much more.
He was genuine and selfless and those who were lucky enough to be part of his journey are blessed.
Irvin is predeceased by his parents and brother Nasif. He is survived by his wife Deborah, daughter Zakia, granddaughters Chyna and Zuiri, five sisters Thelma, Charlene (Donzel), Joyce, Wilma (Dorian), and April and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who were like family to him.
