Joan Althea Roberts was born on November 17, 1944, in Belmont, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, to Vernon Forde and Sybil Brown. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and faithful servant of Christ, Joan peacefully entered the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 14, 2025, at the age of 81. Her life was defined by unwavering faith, deep love for family, and a quiet yet remarkable strength.
Joan was devotedly married to her beloved husband, Prior, for 53 years. Together, they courageously left their homeland of Trinidad and Tobago and emigrated to New York City before eventually settling in Boynton Beach, Florida. They built a life rooted in love and faith, raising their two children, Vanessa and Duane, who were the pride and joy of Joan's life.
As a mother, Joan did not play with her children's behavior or education, desiring to see them maximize their full potential in this life. Forms of discipline included giving you a look, throwing shoes, or boofing you up (which in Trinidad slang is to correct you for doing something wrong). As her children grew older and made comments about her parenting, Joan would say "y'all didn't turn out half bad…lol."
She was a deeply cherished mother-in-law by Adeline and Alonzo, and a grandmother to Davante, Makai, Adren, Jaylen, and Sanai, lovingly known to them as Grandma or G-Ma. She poured wisdom, prayer, encouragement, and unconditional love into each of their lives.
Joan is also survived by her many sisters and brothers, Joyce, Judy Ann, Paula, Cindy, Michell (deceased), Michelle, Ricky, Debra, Thora (deceased), Glynis, Kester, Jessica, Winston, Joyce, Gloria, Sherma, Cheryl, and Lystra along with a host of nieces and nephews (too many to count!). Family meant everything to Joan, and she was known for her warmth, hospitality, genuine care for others, as well as a feisty spirit.
Professionally, Joan dedicated her life to nurturing children. She opened a daycare center in her home, where she lovingly cared for and educated more than 100 children from infancy through preschool. To many families, she was not only a caregiver but a trusted influence during their children's most formative years.
Joan found great joy in cooking and baking, expressing love through meals shared around the table. She made a mean oxtails and red peas, palau, stew chicken, callaloo, curried anything, and she would build a wicked split pea soup on cold and rainy days. Her home was filled with laughter, generosity, music, fellowship, and celebration. She also loved to dance to calypso, soca, reggae, oldies, and sing many of her favorite hymns, embracing life with joy and freedom.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, Joan was closely connected to her church family at Calvary Chapel Boynton Beach and treasured the fellowship of her weekly bible study group of sisters in Christ called the "Seasoned Saints." These amazing women were a constant support to Joan offering love, prayers, and fellowship which often included many birthday celebrations and plenty of food. Her trust in God, gentle spirit, and servant's heart left an enduring impact on all who knew her.
Though her physical presence will be deeply missed, her family and loved ones take comfort in the assurance that she is now whole, healed, and rejoicing in eternal life with Jesus Christ.
