Mary Gayle
Vance
Feb 15, 1941 — Nov 3, 2022
Mary Gayle (Rehbaum) Vance, 81, of Tamarac, Florida passed away on November 3, 2022. A native Floridian, Mary Gayle was born and raised in Clearwater, Florida. During her teen years, her family relocated to Tallahassee, Florida. She was an accomplished Clarinetist for Leon County High School. Upon graduation, she married and traveled with her husband to Arizona, Texas, Arkansas, Michigan and back to Texas. During that time, she brought two children into the world. Later, she relocated with her children to Tallahassee, Florida where she attended Florida State University, Department of Recreation. In 1972, she became a professional Girl Scout and began her career in South Carolina. Her professional Girl Scout career spanned four decades and took her to the states of Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Additionally, she was able to travel internationally to Girl Scout and Girl Guide World Centers. Her love of travel brought her to 49 of the 50 states. She retired in 2004.
In addition to her love of Girl Scouting and the outdoor world, Mary Gayle also loved God. She was confirmed in the Episcopal Church in 1971 and embarked on a lifelong journey as a faithful servant of the Episcopal faith. Her mission work took her to national and international destinations. One of her fondest memories was the fruit orchard she helped establish for the Native Americans attending St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Bluff, Utah. She was active in the Episcopal Cursillo Ministry; a graduate of Education for Ministry (EFM); and a Professed member of the Anamchara Fellowship. It meant the world to her to travel to Iona and the United Kingdom, as well as, to the Holy Land.
Mary Gayle was pre-deceased by her mother, Gayle Gathright Rehbaum; father, William Frederick Rehbaum III; her brother, Karl Edwin Rehbaum; and grandson, Michael Anthony Frey.
Mary Gayle is survived by her brother: William Frederick Rehbaum IV; her son: James Roger Vance (Rose); her daughter: Mary Catherine Vance Watson (Joseph); her grandchildren: Michelle Elizabeth Nestle, Christopher Allan Vance (STSC, USN), Christina Michelle De Vries (David), and Chelsea Danielle Floyd (Tracy); her great grandchildren: Jolie Sue Nestle, Aryah Maria Vance, Dylan Parker De Vries, Vanessa Anne De Vries, and Sytarah Lynn Vance. Mary Gayle is also survived by nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews in addition to many friends.
Not an angel flying by, but a soul so pure it opened the skies. Heaven weeps no more as her soul soars high. Joined with those who've left awhile, she is home. Whether though Girl Scouting as Skipper, MG or Mary Gayle; or, through her work with the Anamchara Fellowship as Sister Mary Hilda, we remember and carry on the work she began. As Jesus told Simon Peter, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later". John 13: 36.
Fair winds and following seas—we will meet again.
