After retiring from there, she worked for 10 years as a Hebrew teacher in the Perelman Hebrew school. Over the course of her life she learned to speak Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Hebrew, and English. She studied graphic design in Poland and received numerous teaching certificates and awards in the United States.
She is pre-deceased by her first husband, Mordechai Verbin, who passed away in 1992; and her parents, Sasha and Bella Gurwitz; and her brother Vov Gurwitz.
In 2004, Rita met Joel Benjamin. Together they decided to move to Coconut Creek, FL after retiring. They married in 2015.
