Obituary

Ruth Wolfe Smith, a dedicated high school science teacher, intrepid traveler, author, and historian, peacefully passed away at the age of 97 on September 18, 2023. Her long and fulfilling life was marked by a profound commitment to education, an insatiable curiosity for the world around her, and a profound connection to her Michigan roots.  She is survived by her three children Paul, David, and Amanda; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandsons.

Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1926,  Ruth grew up during a time when few women pursued scientific studies, she excelled and earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in physics from the University of Michigan.

Her passion for teaching was evident in her engaging classroom lessons and her commitment to the intellectual growth of her students.   Many of her former students credit her with sparking their love for science and for instilling in them a sense of curiosity that extended far beyond the classroom.

Outside of her teaching career, Ruth was an intrepid traveler. She roamed the globe, visiting far-flung destinations that enriched her life with diverse cultures, landscapes, and experiences. Her adventures provided her with a wealth of stories and knowledge that she generously shared with family and friends, inspiring wanderlust in those around her.

One of Ruth's cherished traditions was spending summers in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Her love for the region was further expressed through her dedicated volunteer work at the Michigamme Historical Museum. Here, she shared her vivid recollections of growing up in Michigan, connecting generations by preserving and passing down the rich history of the state she held dear.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Ruth's memory to the Michigamme Historical Museum to support the preservation of Michigan's heritage, a cause close to her heart.   Visit Michigamme Museum in Michigamme Township Michigan for details about contributing.
